Petpets are pets for Neopets. Unlike Neopets, the player does not have to care for them, but some Petpets may eat items out of the player's inventory.

Each Neopet may only have one Petpet, because, according to the Neopets FAQ, more than one would be too much maintenance for the Neopet. However, a Petpet can get their own little critter to take care of called Petpetpets.

Acquiring Petpets[]

Petpets are treated as items - they may be bought, sold, or traded at will. There are even ones that can be made at the Cooking Pot.

Many shops in different worlds sell Petpets, including a shop in each of these areas:

Function of Petpets[]

Petpets can be quite useful in gaining avatars. Additionally, if the Petpet Protection League (PPL) chooses a player's Petpet's species for the week's Petpet award, they could win a trophy. However, Petpets have to be a certain age and cannot be zapped by the Petpet Lab Ray to qualify for the PPL trophy.

Like Neopets, one can change the Petpet's colour at the Petpet Puddle or Petpet Lab Ray (however, this will prohibit them being painted or getting a PPL award; it can also permanently destroy them).

In the Darigan Citadel's Petpet Arena, one can have their Petpet battle several others. If the player wins, their Petpet's level could increase. Apart from gaining a trophy from getting up to the higher levels, Petpet levels serve no purpose outside the Petpet Arena. (However, it used to have impact on the Neopet's power in the Battledome.)

Turmaculus (who resides in Meridell) can only be interacted with if the player's active Neopet owns a Petpet. If the player attempts to awaken the Turmaculus and succeeds, they may win a prize. In addition, if their Petpet gets eaten (which is a very rare occurrence), the player will obtain an avatar. (It is recommended to awaken Turmaculus with a Petpet that the player would not mind losing.)

The Symol Hole (also located in Meridell) is another Petpet-only feature in which the player's active Petpet can be sent down into. They may occasionally pop back out with a prize or an avatar.

Neovia's Grave Danger, yet another Petpet-only feature, involves sending out a Petpet on an adventure through the catacombs for an item.

By clicking their Neopet and go into the Quick Reference page, the player can click on their the Petpet and interact with the Petpet by naming it and speaking to it. One may also unequip their Neopet's Petpet on this page. This will reset the name and age of the Petpet, and return it to the player's inventory. If the Petpet had a Petpetpet (P3) attached, that will disappear permanently.

Trivia[]

  • Prior to March 2024, Neopets would refuse Petpets that contained the same amount of letters as the pet's name (e.g. a pet with a 7-letter name would have refused a Petpet with 7, 14, 21 or 28 letters). The same happened with food, books, grooming items, instruments, and toys. A workaround to this was changing the language on a page that used the classic layout.
  • Petpet Appreciation Day is celebrated every year on June 8th (8th day of Relaxing).
