The term limited edition (LE) describes Neopets that may not be created through normal means, but may be gotten elsewhere on the site. Usually, these pets are released in batches of around 1,000 a few random times a day on their pet days, but more of a certain LE species may be released during special events, such as for Neopets' birthday.
Other ways to get limited edition pets are through adoption, Magical Plushies, Morphing/Mysterious Swirly/Transmogrification Potions, the Holiday Dream Neopet Giveaway, Species Change Premium perk, or Lab Ray (excluding the Tonu).

On the user's desired limited edition pet's day, they can periodically check the Top Neopets page at random times during the day until the number inside of the brackets (as seen above in the example) is higher than the number outside the brackets. This is a strong indicator that there are pets of that species available for creation.
Trivia[]
- Peophins and Moehogs used to be limited edition, but were later made standard.
- Flotsams used to be limited edition due to the number of Jetsams that would eat them, but because Flotsams became harder to find, that also made the Jetsam numbers go down, making them limited edition while Flotsams had that status lifted.
- While Grundos are technically limited edition, they can be made at any time at the Space Adoption Agency.
- Because Draiks and Krawks are rarer and harder to get than most limited edition pets, never being released in the Create-a-Pet method (except on 9/9/09), they are considered restricted instead of limited edition.
- To make room for the standard Vandagyre, Rukis were made limited edition.
