Legends and Letters was a word game for the iOS App Store and Google Play.

Plot[]

Several years after his escape from the Lost Desert, Aurrick accidentally released the evil Claymaker from their prison, and they proceeded to curse the population of Neopia. An unlikely band of allies came together to try and save the day!

Gameplay[]

The game has been described by TNT as "Scrabble meets Neopets battling." To defeat enemies, you had to spell out words by dragging letters onto the board. The first word used in battle had to have at least one letter on the central star tile. The game board was pre-rendered, so power-ups will stay in the same places.

You also had the ability to speed up your game a bit by auto-playing old levels for rewards. (But be careful, you may still lose if the opponent AI is smarter than your team's AI level!)

Power-ups[]

  • Bombs instantly cause significant damage to all enemies in the battle.
  • Potions heal a significant chunk of health for your party or revive defeated allies. These could be purchased from the Gem Store.
  • Tile Swap Pouches were used during battles to give yourself an advantage if you were struggling with a word.

Energy[]

Each character had 15 energy that slowly replenishes over time, but if it reached 0, you would be unable to play any levels for a few minutes. You could also buy Smoothies from the Gem Store to replenish energy early.

Card Inventory[]

You could pick out a Neopet to have as a bonus member of your party for the battle. If you had any friends, they would appear near the top of the list. However, using a friend in battle would put them on cooldown afterwards. Some specific story battles also had famous Neopians that you could use as your bonus members, such as Aurrick or Fyora.

Stats[]

  • Attack
  • Defence
  • Health
  • Strength
  • Element - There are four elements in Legends and Letters: Fire, Water, Earth, and Lightning. These give 35% bonuses against enemies of different elements while also being 35% weaker against another.
  • Rarity - Cards are sorted into 4 rarities: Common, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. Typically, rarer characters have better stats and can level them up further.
  • Party Size - Each character has a size, and this increases depending on Star rating, being the current Star rating of a character +2 (making the current maximum size 7). There's a limit on total Party Size in battle, which can be increased by earning experience.
  • Level
  • Star - Each time a character reaches the maximum level, they can be 'ascended' to a new star rating and begin leveling again to further increase stats. The maximum stars a character can attain is largely dictated by card rarity, with Legendaries having 5 stars.
  • Secondary Stats could only be altered by the special attacks of Neopet party leaders. They were:
    • Armor Penetration - Ignores a certain amount of an enemy's defence.
    • Critical Chance
    • Critical Damage
    • Evasion
    • Accuracy
    • Speed

Ascension[]

Ascending a character card involved resetting it back to level 1, but keeping its stats beforehand and gaining a higher star rating and level cap. This cost coins and other character cards, and could only be done if the ascending card in question was at max level of their set star rating.

Characters[]

Locations[]

  • Krawk Island - Your starting point, having 20 levels to complete.
  • Maraqua - The second world, where, like Krawk Island before it, had 20 levels to complete.
  • Lost Desert - The third world, where Aurrick was up to his old tricks! Unlike the other two worlds, there were 60 levels to complete in this one.

Rainbow Pond[]

In addition to getting new character cards for finishing levels, you could also unlock them via the Rainbow Pond, where the Fountain Faerie would accept summoning tokens (that were rewards for leveling up) to unlock new characters.

Gem Store[]

Legends and Letters had its own micro-transaction store that used Gems as currency. It was possible to earn Gems in small amounts from playing parts of the game.

Items[]

  • Summoning tokens
  • Coins
  • Wearables, which were mostly here for cosmetic purposes and did not affect the gameplay.
  • Paint Brushes, which, as you know, could change your Neopet Leader's colour. Unlike on Neopets.com, however, Paint Brushes were not one-use items in Legends and Letters.
  • Power Ups
    • Healing & Revive Potions
    • Tile Swap Pouch
  • Smoothies, which replenished the energy of your Neopet Leader.
  • Monster Keys, to be used in Monster Battles
  • Skip Tickets, which allowed you to skip straight to the loot in any level. However, these could only be purchased:
    • if you had already beaten the level once
    • if you had enough energy to complete the level otherwise
    • once every 8 hours.

Bosses[]

Character Element Character Type Special Attack Lore
Magmavipor Fire Normal Coiler Boiler - It coils its tail around a foe and sizzles immense damage. 2 Cooldown. The Claymaker forges these monsters from Neopia's volcanoes. The swift slitherers live in gigantic lava pockets until they're forced out by immense seismic activity. They burn a path through forests and towns, destroying everything in their way.
Skellectrus Lightning Normal Shocking Reassembly! - Broken pieces of its mighty armor electromagnetically fly back into place, regaining lost health. 1 Cooldown. The Claymaker draws lightning into ancient stones and uses it to carve out these terrifying creatures. They're drawn to electricity so any towns that survive an electric storm are often faced with these monstrous beasts.
Maelstromo Water Normal Guided Cyclones - It pulls in cyclones from the oceans and engulfs all foes with devastating damage. 1 Cooldown. While out at sea, the Claymaker forms these sea monsters from violent waves. They become masters of tidal manipulation. All of them are drawn to coastal towns to test their powers.
Snickering Shardpelt Earth Normal Quake N' Chuckle - It stomps and hammers both ground and foe with a force of an earthquake, dealing damage. Then, it laughs. 4 Cooldown. These creatures are molded from the remnants of devastating rockslides. They emerge from the ground with a ferocious sense of humor that usually involves smashing boulders with their fists.

Monster Battles[]

Monster Battles were introduced in version 1.6.0 of Legends and Letters and served as the main way of earning Ascension Stones.

Each week, one of four possible bosses would be made available in Monster Battles, one representing each element. They did not drop random loot like normal enemies do; instead, they had fixed loot drops for beating them a specific number of times.

To begin a Monster Battle, you needed three Monster Keys, whi9ch could be purchased from the Gem Store. (Had you selected a friend or random Neopet to help you, you would be charged an extra two Monster Keys per battle.) Each time a new boss appeared, your key count would be reset to 20 - provided you had less than 10 at reset. If your key total dropped below 10, you would begin to earn more free keys at a rate of one key per 8 hours until you got over 10 keys again.

Release and Retirement[]

It was revealed at the 2018 Comic-Con After Party and was released for iOS and Android devices on January 17th and February 7, 2019, in Singapore and Australia while adjustments and improvements continued to be made based on user feedback.

We've heard from TNT that the premature worldwide release on February 21, 2019, was a mistake. A new version of the beta app was meant to be published, but instead, the prior version was actually released worldwide.

On May 20, 2020, Neopets has announced that Ghoul Catchers and Legends and Letters were going to be discontinued to make way for upcoming apps:

BREAKING NEWS: To make way for some of our new, exciting products coming to stores soon, we have decided to retire Ghoul Catchers and Legends and Letters from the app store. If you already have the apps, you can continue to play them even after they are removed from the store. So, if you do not have the apps and want to play, be sure to download them as soon as you can!

Legends and Letters' servers had finally shut down in September 2022.

Trivia[]

  • A Mimbi appeared when the game was loading.

Glitches[]

  • If your Neopets username was 19 or more characters long, your game would crash and not link your account properly. This was soon fixed after it was spotted.
  • When you would reach level 15, the game would crash, but you would still obtain your rewards. This glitch was only visible just after the launch of the game.
  • Users affected by the experience glitch to high-level cards during the beta could then submit tickets to have those cards fixed.
