Diseases are status conditions that Neopets can sometimes contract around the site. Ill Neopets will be unable to train or take part in the Battledome and show their sickly faces on the user's sidebar, homepage, lookup, and Quick Ref page.
Causes of Diseases[]
A disease can be caused many different things, the most basic of which being via random events. The others are more controllable by the user, as they are caused by certain food, games, or items. In fact, some users may intentionally afflict their Neopet with another disease if the one they already have is more expensive than the new one, so that the cure needed for the new disease will be cheaper.
Species-Specific Causes[]
Some Neopets can become sick by eating certain foods that would otherwise not make another pet sick at all:
- Kyriis can get Itchy Scratchies from eating apple and pineapple-based foods.
- Quiggles can get Neezles from eating food containing cream.
- Skeiths can get Neezles from eating cheese items.
- Tonu can get Neezles from eating Neggs or Negg-based food.

Epidemics[]
Itchy Scratchies[]
On 6th March 2001, there was an outbreak of Itchy Scratchies at the Money Tree. Any pets which visited it had a high chance of being infected. The epidemic was brought under control later the same day, and the Water Faerie from the Healing Springs offered to cure those she could.
Scourgies[]
On April Fool's Day 2011, at 1:03:56 AM NST, the Scourgies pandemic was discovered, with the Pharmacy releasing information about how many Neopets began to have fungus growing all over them, as well as showing symptoms of itchiness, dizziness, and muscle aches. Cures could be distributed to Neopets from users at the Hospital, from soup, Slorgs, ice, splints, to blue goo. However, there was a catch; users could only cure someone else's pets, not their own, leading to lots of Neoboards being created solely for curing Scourgies-afflicted pets.
Trivia[]
- On August 24, 2002, the Wheel of Excitement began to give Sneezles to Neopets. This was a done a day after Meuka became a challenger in Defenders of Neopia, allowing users to gain access to fight him.
