April Fools' Day is an event in which TNT pull some practical jokes on Neopians.

2001 - Makeovers[]

The April Fools' tradition began on April Fools' Day of 2001, when Neopets decided to give some "makeovers" to their pets.

The original joke page can be found here!

2002 - Pant Devil Scare[]

When Neopians found the pesky Pant Devil stole the contents of their inventory and safety deposit box, TNT revealed that the whole thing was a hoax. And so, the Neopians got their items back and everybody was happy again--except the Pant Devil, that is, because he stinks.

2003 - Neopetz!![]

In 2003, Neopets transformed into a "cool" version of itself called Neopetz, a 90s-influenced realm that got rid of Neopoints, making the shops free! This also introduced Nick Neopia, who acted as the tour guide for Neopetz.

2004 - Quiguki Armageddon[]

In 2004, TNT revealed the "next" expansion set for the ever-growing TCG: Quiguki Armageddon.

TNT really pulled out all the stops and the whole day's news was centered on adding Quiguki-related memorabilia. Some of this content included an avatar (which can be earned by viewing New Features on April 3rd, after the joke news post is taken down.), some buddy icons, a How-To-Draw featuring a character from the set, and even a Neopedia entry which replaced The Story Of Xanstalon, only for it to return in Y16.

2005 - Upcoming Pets[]

In 2005, 50 pets were shown to be released, but according to Donna in an editorial, some of these were simply old designs that never made it past the drawing board.

A little while after the prank, a vote was held to see which one would be added as a real pet to the site. The Llamameeah ended up winning and was redrawn later that year as the Gnorbu. Since then, several of the other proto-pets were also added as petpets: Calabat, Carmariller, Duocorn, Gwalla, Petoot, Slymook, Soreen and Urchull. (The Leofinn also had a slight makeover before being released as the Lellefisk.)

2006 - NeoCharge[]

In 2006, for each page loaded, Neopians had to pay anywhere from 3NP to 75NP, as shown in an annoying box floating above the page to inform players of how much they owed at the moment.

Most of you may have already noticed the nifty new window to the right! (If you use a theme, don't worry! It will be available in all themes early next week.) This will help us fight inflation and help reduce stress on our servers, both of which will help make Neopets more fun for everyone. You can click here for more information! If you find any bugs, glitches or problems, please let us know!

Here are some of the various charges for loading certain pages around the site:

  • Petpages - 75NP
  • Neomail - 15NP
  • Guild Messages - 12NP
  • Games - 12NP
  • Freebies - 10NP
  • Neoboards - 8NP
  • Shopping - 6NP
  • Random Pages - 3NP

Being unable to pay their bill would result in one or more of the following happening:

  • Item(s) removed
  • Neopet(s) automatically put up for adoption
  • Access to certain parts of the site being restricted
  • Twice as many ads appearing (Premium members would also start seeing ads again)
  • Any painted Neopets will be returned to a default colour

NeoCharge was only a prank, which was extremely fortunate for those users who began holding competitions on the Neoboards to see who could accumulate the highest debts!

2007 - Battledome is Cancelled![]

Neopets was "forced" to remove the Battledome as well as Battledome-related topics.

"Due to circumstances beyond our control, we've had to permanently shut down the Battledome and its associated activities. Obviously, this is not something we wanted to do, and as much as we'd like to fully explain, we aren't allowed to comment at this time. We'll just leave it at that for now.

We know there are many, many Neopians who have worked very, very hard and spent countless Neopoints to train their Neopets for the Battledome. We would like to thank you for participating in past wars and events, and for keeping Neopia safe via Defenders of Neopia. Please know that we haven't forgotten you. We are currently working on new activities that will put these stats to use. Your efforts will NOT be wasted.

We have also been ordered to remove certain Battledome weapons from the site. We realise there are many Neopoints invested there, as well, so instead of simply deleting them from everyone's account, we're putting together a Battledome weapon exchange program. We're still working out the details, but we hope to allow everyone to trade in their weapons for another item of equal or lesser rarity. We will have this ready by Wednesday to comply with the agreement.

We're sorry for the short notice, and for not having alternatives ready for you now, but it was unavoidable. We're working as fast as we can and we think the new stuff will be quite cool. We hope to have everything else up by mid October!"

- The Neopets Team

2008 - NeoBuddies[]

When you logged in to the site, you were presented with a pop-up of various Neopian characters, informing you that you had been "chosen" to sign up and test out the new "NeoBuddy Beta System." In all, you could have been approached by Captain Scarblade, Hannah, Isca, Master Vex, Prince Jazan, Princess Amira, Roxton A. Colchester III, Sophie, and even by his supreme highness, Dr. Sloth. They kept on popping up until you gave in and agreed to take a questionnaire.

The questionnaire was supposedly designed to judge your personality type, the idea being that you would then be assigned a Neopets character with a similar personality to your own who would show up as you browsed the site and give you helpful hints and suggestions. But your answers did not seem to matter as most people ended up being paired with Bug Eye McGee. A small percentage of users were slightly luckier and ended up with Sir Fufon Lui.

2009 - Plantopia[]

This time around, everybody had their site theme automatically changed to the "Neopets Green" theme.

Clicking on the link in the pop-up took users to a page outlining all the features they would "look forward to" with the impending arrival of Neoplants. Amongst the planned changes was the conversion of Neopia to Plantopia, with the world map screen bearing a banner to advertise the upcoming switch.

The Stalk Market Crash[]

Unfortunately, the introduction of Plantopia marked the end of a period known in Neopian history as the Golden Aughts after the Stalk Market Crash of 2009 ushered in a Neopia-wide depression: interest rates had been lowered by 1% for each account type (though, when smart players clicked the "collect interest" button, they still got the same amount they should have received), 400 metric tons of madvines caused Fyora to close the Hidden Tower, the Tiki Tack Man asked for donations at his Tombola stand and inflated his store (along with other shopkeepers around Neopia), tons of pets were out of jobs at the Employment Agency, and the Second-Hand Shoppe started giving out Wooden Barrels that had been donated by the likes of Princess Amira, Hubrid Nox and Lucie.

2010 - The Mother of All Pranks[]

In 2010, the 3D Battledome was announced. See all videos for it here.

With the help of Morton G. Firefly, users were also given the opportunity to prank their Neofriends. There were four types of pranks available.

To prevent the pranks from being ruined on the Neoboards, there were word filters that hid elements of them to prevent them from getting spoiled.

Original Word Filtered Word
3.14 numbers
ash bones
pai mud
pi air
pie danger
p-i-e nice try

snot faerie dust

2011 - Sorry for the Scourgies[]

A Scourgies pandemic swept Neopia in 2011 shortly after midnight NST on April 1st. Affected pets would suffer the symptoms of an individual with NeoFlu.

The Pharmacy shopkeeper explained: "If you're looking for a cure for the new disease, we don't have one. They are working on something over at the Hospital, maybe check there." Visits to the hospital only fueled the panic as the countdown of doom ticked down. The number of pets infected increased as more users logged on.

BULLETIN [1:03:56 am NST]: Neopets all over Neopia have complained of not feeling well. Crowds are rushing to the Pharmacy for a cure, but the illness has not yet been identified. Scientists across the land are hard at work, trying to find the source of the illness so they can contain it as they search for a treatment.

BULLETIN [3:42:21 am NST]: Symptoms of the unidentified illness include growths on the face and body, a persistent cough, and severe headache. Neopians are encouraged to remain indoors and avoid those showing symptoms of the illness. It is recommended that Neopians cover the gaps in the doors and windows of their Neohomes to keep out germs.

BULLETIN [8:37:06 am NST]: Neopian Hospital over-run with sick Neopets, all suffering from this mysterious illness. Further symptoms include itchiness, dizziness, and muscle aches. If you have any of these symptoms, please avoid contact with healthy Neopets, drink plenty of fluids, and rest in a darkened room. BULLETIN [10:20:13 am NST]: Neopian health crisis worsens as doctors, chemists, and potion-makers scramble to find a cure. Panic sets in among a worried populace; shelves at the Pharmacy are emptied by Neopets desperate for a cure for this horrible illness. Meanwhile, cases have been reported in every Neopian land, making it a pandemic.

BULLETIN [12:51:59 pm NST]: The mystery disease has been identified as the Scourgies. It is highly contagious. Avoiding contact with other Neopets is critical at this stage so the disease does not spread any further. Doctors are continuing to look for a cure before all hope is lost.

Eventually, cures were made available. As a result, users could cure other users' pets, as well have other users cure their pet. The cures did not show up in the user's inventory - they were directly applied to the pet as a wearable item. Users that cured a lot of pets using Blazing Hot Soup had a chance to win the Blazingly Hot Soup Background.

By the time the cures wore off, the pets would be reinfected. As the infection continued to spread, hazard signs began to appear around Neopia.

The next day, Neopia returned to normal, and pets would be free of Scourgies by customising them and saving. Unlike other diseases, pets infected with Scourgies had no real ramifications, as they could still fight in the Battledome as normal.

2012 - Dizzy...[]

In 2012, the Shop Wizard was dizzy due to eating too much Swill Pudding before work. However, the shoppers of Neopia tried to continue as if everything were normal.

With the Shop Wizard out of commission, they next turned to the "capable" hands of Hoka, the shopkeeper of Ugga Shinies. While he seemed friendly enough, he could not count very high, limiting the offers users could make to dung items and up to 1,000 NP. He could also slightly mix up the offer. In finalizing the trade, the choices boiled down to "arvu" and "nablu".

The Auction House was also filled with dung, and Nigel, the stockbroker Chia, was bidding on everything in sight.

Fed up with the odd series of events, many gave up and went about their daily lives, some taking their pets for treatment at the Lab Ray. While Neopians were at first thrilled to have their pet change into Custard, Darigan, Maraquan, or Strawberry, they quickly realized that the crazy scientist kept zapping the wrong pets!

Those who had gone to read the news were in for an even nastier surprise.

2013 - Return of Merchandise[]

The Neopets Team proudly announced that they would once again be making a foray into the realms of merchandise.

First in the showcase were board game versions of the Battledome and Neopets for players to enjoy in their living rooms.

Next, they unveiled their new line of "handy household products", including an Esophagor Waste Receptical and a D.I.Y. Cosmetic Surgery Kit.

And last (and definitely least), TNT were going to put their own distinct stamp on the food market with Gross Food:

2014 - Dr. Death Retires[]

In 2014, after years of service at the Neopian Pound, Dr. Death had decided it was finally time to retire from his position as Pound Director. From then, the Pound was closed until a suitable replacement had been found. In the meantime, kind Neopians were chosen at random through Random Events to foster the poor pets in Dr. Death's absence.

Later that day, a contest was held to determine who the next Pound Director would be: Bug Eye McGee, Count Von Roo, Rosie, or the Kreludan Defender Robot.

After midnight NST, Dr. Death returned and re-opened the Pound, and the contest concluded with Rosie as the winner. As a result, she became the overseer of the Neopian Pound Neoboard.

2015 - JumpStart![]

On April 1st, 2015 (a year following JumpStart's acquisition of Neopets) Neopians were treated to a brand new, JumpStart-ified site theme that featured the JumpStart world and its characters; it was permanently added to everyone's site theme collections the next day.

But that's not all! The map of Neopia and Games Room were respectively covered by the JumpStart map and a list of JumpStart games; clicking it would remove it from the page.

2016 - Net Worth Calculator[]

In 2016, TNT, ever anticipating their users' needs, developed the Neopian Net Worth Calculator, which looked at various aspects of the users' accounts to determine their net worth.

TNT also released four new items, each with the potential to raise the user's net worth even further. While the Stamp Retriever and Avvie Pro were only available to users who had already gained access to the Inner Circle, the Name Change Certificate and Neocash Printer could be purchased by anyone while they were on sale during the first of April. Unfortunately, not a single user figured out where they were being sold.

In the end, the Neopian Net Worth Calculator came to a surprising conclusion: that every Neopets user, regardless of accumulated wealth, social standing, or taste in wearables, was priceless. As such, everyone who used the calculator was awarded with a Priceless Seal.

In other news, TNT announced the reveal of a new movie called Dr. Sloth Returns and game called Neopets 3D, a virtual world in the vain of Petpet Park.

2017 - Happy Together[]

In 2017, TNT decided to open the Befriending Dome, which would allow users to make new friends and strengthen bonds with the ones they already have.

TNT decided to hold another poll with three new colors to choose from: Marshmallow, Inverted, and Blurry!

In the end, there was a pretty equal 33%/33%/34% split among the three options, so, the winning result ended up being...

MarshInvBluDo!

2018 - NeopiaLand®[]

In 2018, TNT announced a new theme park, NeopiaLand®, that was planned to be built in China.

" NeopiaLand will be based on the land and lore of Neopia, and will feature an outdoor amusement park, a dining and commercial district named "Neopia Central" and a five-star luxury hotel we call "AstroVilla". The park will feature 32 rides in five themed areas, 'The Haunted Woods', 'Kiko World' 'Mystery Island', 'Roo Island' and 'Faerieland'. Our construction manager also enjoys telling anyone who is willing to listen to him about plans for a sixth land, but we assure you that no such land exists. The park is expected to be open to the public by the second half of 2020. "

Rides/Attractions[]

  • Faerieland Drop Tower - Enjoy the free fall ride of your life...from the clouds. Just like Faerieland did.
  • The Games Room - A state-of-the-art gaming arena where you can play arcade versions of Kass Basher, Igloo Garage Sale, Rink Runner and other popular mini-games!
  • Temple of 1000 Traps - Find your way through this ancient tomb, but beware - there are one thousand different traps that you may get caught in.
  • Jelly Bounce - Now this sounds like a great idea, but of course no such feature exists.

NeopetsTV[]

To accompany NeopiaLand, a new TV station dubbed NeopetsTV was also announced, with various programming set to enter production:

  • The Tiara: A young Fyora rises to the occasion and accepts the reigns of a magical kingdom that is up in the clouds amidst many challenges. One of them is a dark force looking to bring her down.

2020 - The Return of Nick Neopia[]

In 2017, the self-proclaimed tour guide of Neopetz, Nick Neopia, returned with a vengeance: to bring Neopets into the Web 13.0 era!

Press Release[]

GREAT NEWS! I somehow talked my way into another gig with Neopetz... I mean Neopets. Nick Neopia coming at you live with a massive overhaul of Neopets. Don't get me wrong I love Neopets (my last name is Neopia after all!), but the site was in desperate need of a style redesign. After listening to focus groups it was clear you guys wanted a more spontaneous and inventive layout. Which is why the Neopet Team wisely called for my expertise! Even though I'm working from home I've already started to revamp the entire site. We're getting younger. Sleeker. And we are bringing an air of sophistication to Neopia. So sit back, relax, and scroll through some of the spectacular design changes I've instituted to make Neopets more abstract and fascinating. Just don't send us too many messages praising my genius and the new look. Our servers can only handle so many compliments! If you just can't get enough, here are some more design changes I will be implementing in the near future...

Backwards text Who wants words that are easy to read? Boring people! That's why all of the text on our website will soon be reversed, meaning the only way to read it will be by holding a mirror up to your computer screen. What fun!

Mystery Links Who wants to know exactly where they are going? There's no mystery in it! Which is exactly why I will be changing every single link on the site to randomly redirect users to click on them. Next time you want to play a game of Cave Glider you might have to navigate your way through hundreds, maybe even thousands of random links before you find it! Sounds like an adventure to me!

13D Games Speaking of games, I had the fantastic idea of revamping all the existing Neopet games. Some focus groups talked about how much fun a 3-d or VR game would be, so I went above and beyond! I instructed the tech team to modify our games so that they can be played in 13D. That's 10 more D's than 3D! This project might be in the pipeline for a while, since the tech guys keep hounding me with unrelated questions like "How do you expect us to do that?" or "What does 13D even mean?", but rest assured it is coming soon!

2024 - Smile Withme[]

AF Banner 2024

In 2024, pets around Neopia appeared sad, no matter what their statuses indicated. Thus, it was up to a strange being called Smile Withme to cheer them up by placing inspirational posters around the site. The user's main objective was to click on the X button on each of the posters to get rid of them, unlocking more interactions with him. When enough posters got closed, he would offer the user to sign his contract, then reward them with his mask (a no-trade wearable and toy); playing with it would cause him to reveal his true identity as Chadrick (aka Chadley). There was also an avatar rewarded if the user clicked on more posters, which would then become more depressing.
